I’m still buzzing from this insane circumstance of a quick jam with one of the most unique, multi-multi-faceted, and prolific bands I’ve ever witnessed — in front of my adopted hometown of the last decade, Nashville. It truly meant the world. A bit of context…

I’ve been a fan of KGLW for some time; in particular, marveling at how they masterfully blend so many genres across their (checks notes…) 26 ALBUMS . They’re a fascinating band who have created a beautiful community of a fanbase, of which my wife and I are proud members.

Fast-forward to this year when Infectious Grooves toured in Australia, I was so stoked that the amazingly talented Mickey Cavs wanted to meet up and hang at our show in Melbourne! Not only is he a phenom and inspiration on the drums, he and the Gizz boys are some of the most down-to-Earth people I’ve met in music. My mind was blown to smithereens when Cavs asked me last week if I’d like to jump up on his kit when they came to town. I couldn’t possibly stand my bro up!

Chloe and I have been watching the epic livestreams from every show of their current tour, and one moment in particular stood out — when they brought up an amazing shredder named Timmy to play “Perihelion” in tribute to his friend Joey. It was such a moving gesture, so that song felt like a righteous choice to keep honoring a fellow member of the Weirdo Swarm!

Personally, to play a song with such friendly folks, on a beautiful night, in the city for which I took a chance and left home 10 years ago, looking out at a bridge I’ve driven over hundreds of times…I’ll never forget this moment. Long live King Gizz, thank you dudes a million times over.

“RADIO NOWHERE” LIVE DRUM CAM

Perhaps stating the obvious, I’ve seen ‪Bruce and the mighty E Street Band more than I have any other artist over the last 25 years…it’s got to be in the multiple hundreds of shows by now. And I can say with complete confidence — the dates I’ve seen of their current tour have been amongst my absolute favorite times seeing them. Every night is pure mastery in storytelling and rock and roll power; an emotional journey of music that’s inspiring and moving in every way.

My wife and I have tried to catch as much of this tour as possible. A joy for me, personally, to finally share with her this huge part of my family’s and my history — especially to watch my Dad turn into a complete drumming weapon night after night. It was a complete surprise to receive an invitation from The Boss himself to sit in for a song during the last show of their summer tour that we’d be able to see — in Barcelona, right before linking up with ‪Suicidal Tendencies for our summer tour.

Out of all the songs I learned and played on tour with Bruce throughout 2009 — many of which drew from genres I had never really approached in my four years of drumming experience — ‘Radio Nowhere’ felt the most like a natural extension of the music I had gravitated towards as a teenager. To this day, this song holds a very special place in my heart. It was a thrill to revisit playing on E Street, 15 years later.

I’m eternally grateful to Bruce, to my Dad, to everyone on and off this stage…a true family. For sharing this moment, and for the lifetime of memories. This is one I’ll never forget.

HIP SURGERY UPDATE

This past Tuesday, after three years of careful planning, I was finally able to repair the torn labrum of my left hip and shave down a misshapen part of my femur — an outpatient procedure I’ve wanted to undergo, that’s been a moving target around my recording and touring schedule. The condition never impacted my drumming in any way; only limited my ability to exercise normally: jogging, sit-ups, etc.

After a follow-up MRI in August, I made the decision (alongside those close to me in my personal and professional life) to schedule this surgery on the soonest possible date following the last performance of 2023, with the ambition and expectation of myself and my doctors to be stage-ready for the next show in April. A commitment I made to myself and to you — although news of this procedure was kept internal. In fact, knowing I wouldn’t be able to play drums for a few months was partially my motivation to create my @mixwavedigital instrument — so I could remain collaborative and creative in my own style and sound until I could return to my drums.

Though my commitment to fully healing remains the same, I’ll be disappointed to not see all of you in Vegas as planned.

Perhaps some of you are facing your own challenges — we all do. I’m here to speak from experience: no matter how down-and-out you might feel, there are reasons to be hopeful, and to keep an actively positive mindset. Have your own back. Surround yourself with positive people. Focus on what gives your life meaning and a sense of purpose.

I spent today crutching around a part of NYC that first inspired me to follow the calling of a creative life. It was affirming to revisit a place that brings back memories of falling in love with metal, punk, and hardcore.

I like to think I’ve always shot from the hip (lol) with you, and I see no reason to change that now. I look forward to sharing this journey with you, and I hope to show my gratitude by keeping you all up-to-date in my adventure back to 100%. I’d also like to thank my awesome team of doctors, as I’m already on the path back to what I love to do the most!

The path forward through this recovery will be a challenge, but it’s one I’m up for.

I sometimes wonder what it would be like to pay a visit to my wide-eyed, 10-year-old self — falling head over heels in love with a new and exciting sound and culture — and tell him all about the last 10 years. Even on the hardest days, I’d like to think he’d be stoked about the adventure that was in store for him.

I was heartbroken and blindsided to receive the phone call that I did on the morning of November 5th; the news of which, most of you learned shortly after. However, I’ve been overwhelmed by — and truly grateful for — the outpouring of love and support I’ve received from this incredible community I consider to be my creative and artistic home.

This is not the ending to the journey I’d dreamt of, and committed myself to seeing through — not by a long shot. But, despite the confusion and sadness, there is something that’s provided an equal amount of comfort. For many of you reading this: 10 years ago, we weren’t yet acquainted. And now, we are. For that, I’m thankful in ways I’ll never be able to fully express.

I love playing the drums. I’ll always love playing the drums. I’ll always have a passion for music, art, and creative expression. Nothing will ever change that.

I don’t know how, and I don’t know when, but I look forward to creating loud, passionate, and heartfelt music that we enjoy together again. Until then, please know it’s been the joy of a lifetime to spend the last 10 years with you, sharing in our love for this special corner of the music and art world.

This isn’t the end, and I’m thrilled to discover what the future has in store for us.
